Weaning is one of the most important stages in lamb production, and careful nutritional management during this period can have a major impact on lamb growth, health, and overall flock profitability.

Introducing creep feed before weaning helps lambs transition smoothly from a milk-based diet to solid feed, reducing stress and maintaining performance during a potentially challenging time.

• Lambs naturally begin to nibble concentrates from an early age, and providing a highly palatable feed encourages early rumen development.
• A well-developed rumen enables lambs to digest forage and concentrates more efficiently after weaning, helping them maintain daily liveweight gain without setbacks.
• Research and on-farm experience consistently show that creep-fed young lambs often achieve faster growth rates and improved finishing performance compared to lambs fed in the autumn/winter.

Young lambs have the ability to convert 2kg of creep into 1kg liveweight gain, compared to older lambs, which can take up to 5-6kg of creep for just 1kg of liveweight gain. This becomes especially important in early lambing systems, where lambs may be weaned at just four to six weeks old.

By introducing concentrates early, farmers can reduce the nutritional shock associated with weaning and produce stronger, more resilient lambs.

Beyond improved growth rates, creep feeding can also ease pressure on ewes, particularly during periods of poor grass growth or when rearing twins and triplets.
